Tamron has officially announced the 16-50mm f/2.8 Di III (Model B091) for Nikon Z-mount, giving APS-C shooters a constant-aperture standard zoom that weighs 315 grams. Pre-orders are expected to open shortly at B&H Photo, Foto Erhardt and WEX Photo. Tamron has not yet published pricing or a shipping date, so budget planning remains provisional until retailer listings go live.

The lens is not a Z-mount exclusive. Tamron announced it simultaneously for Sony E-mount, Fujifilm X mount and Canon RF mount, and the Z version carries a modest physical penalty for the wider throat: 81.6mm in length and 315g, against 79.6mm and 305g for the Sony and Fujifilm variants. The Canon RF version is the shortest at 77.6mm.

What do the specifications mean for working shooters?

The optical formula runs 14 elements in 10 groups, with a 55mm filter thread — a cheap size to stock in quantity. The maximum aperture holds at f/2.8 across the zoom range, and the circular diaphragm uses 7 blades, staying near-circular up to two stops down. Minimum aperture is f/16.

Close focus is where the design gets practical:

  • 0.15m (6 in) minimum object distance at the wide end
  • 0.29m (11.5 in) at the tele end
  • 1:4.5 maximum magnification at 16mm; 1:4.8 at 50mm

That wide-end figure sits closer to working distance than a conventional standard zoom typically offers, which matters for tabletop product work and tight interior frames on APS-C bodies.

Tamron's stated design goals for B091 include high-speed, high-precision autofocus that it describes as quiet, positioning the lens for travel and everyday video shooting. The company also lists moisture-resistant construction and a fluorine coating on the front element. One workflow detail stands out: a strap-hole front cap, which Tamron says improves security and handling — a small but real convenience for event shooters who swap caps constantly.

Tamron also applies what it calls its "Toned Profile Next" design language to the barrel, a cosmetic rather than functional change.

How does it fit the current Z-mount lineup?

The announcement continues a steady Tamron push into Nikon Z. The company confirmed the 20-40mm f/2.8 Di III VXD (Model A062) for Z-mount on October 8, 2026, and officially announced the 35-100mm f/2.8 Di III VXD earlier in February. The new 16-50mm completes a run of f/2.8 zooms that lets a Z-APS-C kit cover wide to short-telephoto at consistent aperture.

For a working comparison: at 315g, the B091 weighs roughly as much as a pro mirrorless body's kit pancake — light enough to keep a second body loaded for events without rethinking the bag.

Standard accessories include a flower-shaped hood, front cap and rear cap. Until Tamron confirms price and availability, the value case against Nikon's own APS-C options stays open; the deciding figures should appear when B&H, Foto Erhardt and WEX switch on their pre-order pages.
