Viltrox will announce its AF 35mm f/1.4 PRO for Nikon Z-mount on October 29, with pre-orders already open at B&H Photo and the Viltrox store. A 10% discount code, NIKONRUMORS, is live. Two days out, the full spec sheet is on the table — but the price, the one number working photographers actually budget against, is not.
What do the specs say?
The lens is a full-frame 35mm prime aimed squarely at wedding reportage, street work, environmental portraits, and available-light video. Viltrox positions it against f/2.8 zooms on brightness: f/1.4 buys roughly two stops, which in practice means faster shutter speeds or lower ISO indoors and at dusk. That's the revenue pitch for event shooters who can't add light.
The optical formula counts 16 elements in 12 groups — three ED, four high-refractive-index, and two precision aspherical elements. Multi-layer HD Nano coatings plus a water- and dirt-repellent front coating round out the glass. Viltrox claims this design targets corner-to-corner sharpness; that's a marketing sentence until independent testing says otherwise.
The physical numbers matter for bag weight:
- 84.5mm diameter, 111mm length, 760g
- 77mm filter thread
- 11-blade aperture, f/1.4–f/16
- Minimum focus 0.3m, 0.18× magnification
- 62.6° angle of view
- USB port for firmware updates
Where does this sit in Viltrox's lineup?
Viltrox now runs four tiers, and the classification tells you what you're paying for. LAB: high-spec optics, a small screen, a control ring, VCM motor. PRO — this lens's tier: high-spec optics with an aperture ring and VCM motor. EVO: stepless aperture ring and STM motor. AIR: lightweight, no extra controls, STM motor. The 35mm f/1.4 PRO slots in below LAB but carries the flagship motor and full control set.
How does it handle?
Controls are the full professional kit: a de-clickable aperture ring with a CLICK switch, an Fn button, and an AF/MF switch on the barrel. The click-stop mode suits stills work; the clickless option smooths exposure pulls during video. Internal focusing keeps the barrel length constant, which keeps filters and hoods behaving and holds focus geometry steady on rig-mounted bodies.
Autofocus runs on what Viltrox's sales materials call HyperVCM — a voice-coil motor the manufacturer bills as fast, precise, and quiet for both stills and video. Note the phrasing. "Referred to in sales materials" is doing some lifting; real-world AF speed and silent operation on Z bodies need verification, not a brochure.
Close focus of 0.3m and 0.18× magnification cover food, details, and decorations without pretending to be macro. Viltrox says so itself.
What's the catch?
The body is metal with a metal bayonet, dust and moisture seals, and a rubber gasket at the mount. Viltrox is unusually candid about the limits: the sealing "does not guarantee complete waterproofness," and the lens needs protection from heavy rain and splashes. The supplied hood helps with flare and with keeping drops, snow, and dust off the front element. Field shooters should read that caveat before treating it as a foul-weather lens.
The 77mm thread takes polarizers, NDs, and effect filters — relevant for anyone shooting f/1.4 in daylight or filming outdoors.
Availability
Two versions ship: Sony E and Nikon Z. No US price has been announced. Until October 29 confirms pricing, ship dates, and measured optical performance, budget nothing — the discount code expires whenever Viltrox decides it does.
