Skylum has released Luminar version 1.29.0, a fall update that is free to current owners and available now through the software's automatic update mechanism or the "Check for Updates" option in the Luminar dropdown menu. The release adds four principal features: an AI-driven crop tool, a reworked Atmosphere fog effect, an improved Enhance engine and a new AI Assistant. A hands-on test of an advance copy found the update genuinely useful, with clear differences in maturity between the tools.
How well does the new AI crop work?
The crop tool reads the image and proposes several finished compositions, weighing subjects, balance, leading lines and visual weight. In testing on a wide pre-dawn landscape from southern Utah, the software offered multiple options; the reviewer selected "Golden Triangle" and judged it an intelligent choice, with sufficient resolution remaining to execute the crop.
Performance was not uniform. The tool did not work as well on every image tested. The reviewer's practical verdict: photographers who own the software should run images through it, because it can offer a fresh take on files they already consider finished.
What makes the fog tool the standout?
The revised Atmosphere tool is, in the tester's assessment, the strongest item in the release. Rather than laying a flat fog layer over the frame, the effect blends into the scene by responding to its light, color and depth. Luminar builds a depth map (a per-pixel estimate of distance from camera), which lets the user place fog forward or back in the image.
Controls include fog type — ground fog, wispy or heavy — plus amount, height and coverage from patchy to full. Applied to a collapsing barn photographed in central Missouri, with prior work from the Luminar Light Depth tool emphasizing the subject, the effect produced a pleasing result kept deliberately subtle.
The reviewer calls it "the best I've seen in an editor" and credits the depth mapping for the realism. The ethical debate around AI-generated additions to photographs remains live, but use of the tool is optional.
Do Enhance and the AI Assistant deliver?
The improved Enhance tool analyzes the raw file first, then adjusts shadows, highlights and saturation with more restraint than the old version, which could look overprocessed. It will not complete an edit on its own. It functions as a time-saver at the start of an editing session, and the reviewer found it clearly smarter than its predecessor on raw files.
The AI Assistant sits at the beginner end of the spectrum. It examines images, opens a dialog with suggested next steps, and either applies an edit directly or launches a tutorial explaining how to use Luminar's tools. The tester found it interesting but not particularly helpful, and does not plan to call it up during real editing work.
What does the update cost and how do you get it?
The fall update is free for eligible current Luminar owners and can be pulled through the update menu. New buyers can purchase through the Skylum website, where a 10% discount is currently offered with the code FSTOPPERS10.
For working photographers, the practical value concentrates in two tools: the AI crop, which performed better than expected on select images, and the depth-aware fog, which the reviewer describes as a home run. The AI Assistant appears aimed at expanding the user base rather than serving professionals mid-workflow. Skylum has not announced what the next release cycle will bring.
