Nikon Ships Z8 Firmware 3.11, Targeting Tethering and Lockup Bugs
Nikon's Z8 firmware 3.11 fixes three bugs: NX Tether menu glitches, flicker-reduction setting drift on shared custom controls, and a camera hang tied to Manage Picture Control.

Processing notes
- Nikon released firmware version 3.11 for the Z8, available from the Nikon Download Center
- The update fixes three bugs: unsupported features selectable in NX Tether wireless connection, High-frequency flicker reduction setting changing when sharing a custom control with another role, and camera stops responding during shooting after Manage Picture Control operations
- This is a bug-fix-only release with no new features, unlike recent major Z-series firmware updates
Nikon has released firmware version 3.11 for the Z8, a maintenance update that fixes three bugs rather than adding features. The download is available now from Nikon's Download Center.
The three fixes:
- Unsupported features would sometimes become selectable when the camera was wirelessly connected to NX Tether.
- The [High-frequency flicker reduction] setting would sometimes change when [High-frequency flicker reduction] and another role, such as [Protect], were assigned to the same custom control.
- The camera would sometimes stop responding during shooting if certain operations were performed after settings were made in [Manage Picture Control].
For working photographers, the third fix is the one that matters most. A camera that stops responding during a shoot is a potential missed frame on a paid assignment, and the condition — a hang triggered by specific operations after [Manage Picture Control] changes — sits squarely in a workflow that studio and event shooters use regularly. If you build custom Picture Controls for client deliverables, this update removes a failure mode that could bite mid-job.
The NX Tether fix is relevant to anyone running wireless tethered setups. Nikon's own tethering software exposing menu options that shouldn't be selectable is the kind of inconsistency that leads to wasted troubleshooting time on set, even when the options turn out to be inert.
The flicker-reduction fix targets shooters who rely on custom controls. Photographers working under LED and high-frequency artificial lighting — corporate events, interiors, sports venues — often map flicker reduction to a custom button for quick toggling. The bug, which caused the setting to drift when the function shared a control with another role like [Protect], could silently change behavior between setups. Assigning multiple roles to a single control is a common configuration on bodies used across varied assignments, so the scope of exposure is real.
This is a patch release, not a feature drop. Unlike recent Z-series updates such as the Z9's version 5.30 or the Zf's version 3.00 with its film grain feature, 3.11 ships no new functionality. That's worth noting before scheduling update time: there's no new capability here to evaluate, only stability. The practical question for a busy shooter is whether the bugs being fixed intersect with your workflow — tethered shooting, custom Picture Control management, or multi-role custom controls. If any of those apply, the update is low-cost insurance.
As always with mid-cycle firmware, the standard caution applies: schedule the update between assignments, not the night before a shoot, and verify your custom banks and button assignments afterward. Firmware updates occasionally reset or alter settings, and confirming your configuration is faster than discovering a changed control during a session.
The Z8 remains a current body in Nikon's professional mirrorless line, and the cadence of small maintenance releases suggests Nikon is continuing to support it as a working camera rather than letting minor bugs accumulate. Z8 owners can download version 3.11 directly from the Nikon Download Center; expect further refinements — and possibly a more substantial feature update — as the camera's firmware cycle continues.
